On the Cutting Board – February

I’ve decided to add a new feature to my blog… On the Cutting Board. I want to show what I am working on personally, whether quilt blocks, clothes, placemats, or whatever strikes my fancy next. I plan on doing it at the mid-month mark because it is a good mark on the wall. I don’t want to repeat material in case you follow my personal blog, so this will be a summary with links to other blog posts that have more details. Here is the inaugural – and February version.

Top Right: I’ve been working hard on bee blocks. January was Heather from Quilts in the Queue in the Stash Bee. She asked for this yellow, red, or orange paper pieced block so she could add blocks and make a larger quilt.

Bottom Middle and Right: I’m also part of the 4×5 Modern Bee this winter, and have 5 more blocks to make. I am chain piecing a paper pieced star, so the middle picture shows the organizing step. The bottom right picture shows the in-process views of 4 of the 5 blocks.

Top and Bottom Left: I’m also a year behind on the 2013 Lucky Stars Block of the Month. I completed the practice and January blocks. I’m hoping to finish two blocks a month on this project. The eventual goal is a queen sized sampler quilt. The blocks I am going to receive from the 4×5 Modern Bee will be combined with these blocks and a few others that I’ve been wanting to try. The goal is to finish this by the fall, but we’ll see how busy it gets here.

Middle Top: I also participated in the Winter 2014 Kids Clothes Week, and made a pair of pants and a onesie for my daughter. The post about the pants can be found here, and the onesie at the bottom of this post here.

I have a few parts to replace on my machine this weekend, then I should be back to doing some long arm quilting!

Welcome! I have finally finished moving to my new site, so please check it out and let me know what you think 🙂

I’ve learned a lot about HTML and wordpress throughout this process, but now that it’s done I can get back to the work I really love – quilting!

Spinnaker Quilt

This is the last quilt I had on the machine before Christmas, a Christmas gift for my dad.

The design is a rounded rectangle edge to edge panto.

I quilted it with putty (beige) So Fine #50 thread. It was a good neutral color for a quilt with so many colors.

I also machine sewed the binding on to the front of this quilt – saving tons of time!

This is the back of this quilt. The back was pieced, and there is linen in both the back and front, but it quilted up very nicely.

Here is the completed quilt – so pretty!

It was wonderful to end the year on this note 🙂

Out to Sea Quilt

This quilt is an oversized baby quilt meant to transition from baby to toddlerhood in both size and motif. It is centered around the pirate girls from the “Out to Sea” fabric collection, and is a fun quilt both front and back.

This shows a closeup of the pieced back. The map is also a panel from the “Out to Sea” fabric collection.

This shot of the back really shows off the nautical quilting design. I used light grey thread on this quilt to blend in.

Here is a closeup of what the design looks like on the front.

Now, some action shots of the quilting in progress. My Millennium is center stage in this one.

I love how you can see the design on the light back as I rolled the completed portion up.

Blue and Brown Pandora’s Box

This quilt is from “Jelly Roll Quilts” by Pam & Nicky Lintott. It is a sweet blue and brown baby version. I quilted it with interlocking squares in a geometric pattern to make it a little more masculine and to help it survive lots of use.

Here it is loaded on the long arm.

A closeup of the quilting design. I used light blue thread that blended nicely into the blue portions, but didn’t stand out too much in the cream and brown sections.

This is a true color version of this quilt.

Pink and Brown Quilt

This is a special quilt that was a long work in progress! I started this quilt in early 2011 while I was in Afghanistan. More of the story of this quilt can be found here.

I quilted it with an allover heart pantograph to help keep the quilt feminine and soft. The closeup below shows the design better than the overall views. I used a very light pink that blended well into the multitude of shades of pink and cream.

The back shows the design as well.

This is the pieced back. The bottom pink portion is flannel, so this will be a soft and warm quilt.
